036: Watching the Game with Michael Magid
All young goalkeepers are told that they should find time to watch soccer. But as Michael Magid explains in today’s episode, there’s a big difference between passively experiencing a game and actively studying it. The host of Inside the 18 and the Owner/Director of the L.A. Goalkeeping Academy, Michael shares his expertise in goalkeeping, and offers advice on how to get the most out of the games you watch.
After a semipro goalkeeping career for a number of Southern Californian clubs, Michael has transitioned into coaching and goalkeeper education … as well as acting and stand-up comedy. In today’s show, we cover all of that ground and more.
Michael talks about the keys to being truly engaged in the matches you watch, but also why it’s important – especially for young viewers – to be able to relax and just enjoy the game sometimes. We discuss the importance of repeated viewing, the value of slowing the game down to study it, and also the areas and cues that you should be looking for.
Along the way, Michael also talks at length about the excellent Inside the 18 podcast – also dedicated to goalkeeping – which he co-hosts with Omar Zeenni and Trevor Stiles.
The episode is a full 30 minutes, and there’s even more in the Outtakes segment below. I hope you enjoy it!
