030: Training Rangers Goalkeepers with Colin Stewart
No one at Rangers Football Club is more familiar with the club’s training and educating of goalkeepers than Colin Stewart. As the current first-team goalkeeping coach and former head of Academy goalkeeping, Colin discusses how one of the largest clubs in Europe approaches the position across all age groups.
After a youth career in England and a professional career in Scotland, Colin transitioned from playing to coaching in 2012. On today’s show, he talks about his current coaching post on a revitalized Rangers first team, as well as his time working with youth goalkeepers and goalkeeping coaches as part of the Academy.
Colin outlines a typical week in the life of a Rangers Academy goalkeeper, and discusses the critical tactical, technical and psychological skills and abilities that they focus on. He also addresses the important role that failure plays in the development of a young keeper, and the ways that coaches and parents can help – or hinder – that development.
Along the way, Colin also points to lessons that young keepers can learn from first-team goalkeepers Allan McGregor and Wes Foderingham. It’s a dense 30 minutes, and there’s even more in the Outtakes segment below. I hope you enjoy it!
Special thanks to Allan McGregor for joining me!
