063-064: The Side Volley with Omar Zeenni
Few goalkeeping techniques inspire as much social media attention as the side volley. So who better to break it down than Pro GK owner/trainer and social media wiz, Omar Zeenni? From the big-picture questions like “Why?” and “When?” to the specific technical details, Omar answers all your questions about this trendy – but also very useful – mode of distribution.
Drawing on playing experience in the L.A. Galaxy Academy and at the college level with UC Davis, Omar has transitioned into coaching, both collegiate goalkeepers and through his own academy. He also manages the Pro GK social media handle and is 1/3 of the podcasting team that brings you Inside the 18 every week.
In Part I of the interview, the focus is on Omar, his playing and coaching history, and some of the big moments and decisions that have shaped him as a coach. We discuss the impact of social media on goalkeeping and, specifically, the role it has played on the side volley. Finally, Omar addresses why the side volley is an important tool to learn, and when you should be prepared to use it.
In Part II, we take a deep dive on the very specific elements and nuances of the technique – everything from foot angles to ball height to proper follow-through.
In addition, you can check out an accompanying video below, from Omar’s YouTube channel, to help visualize the approach he describes on the show. I hope you enjoy it!
