079: The Division 1 Experience with Chris Rich
For many young players in the U.S., college soccer aspirations reach their pinnacle with the NCAA’s Division 1. Chris Rich, the head men’s soccer coach at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, discusses the advantages of the top tier and what he looks for in future UNCG Spartan goalkeepers.
Chris brings more than a decade of coaching experience to the table, including – most recently – as the goalkeeping coach and the recruiting coordinator for ACC powerhouse Duke University. During his tenure in Durham, he engineered three consecutive recruiting classes that were all ranked among the top in the nation.
On today’s episode, Chris examines the many benefits that Division 1 soccer programs can typically offer. In particular, he breaks down the resources and services that his Spartans have at their disposal. He describes their day-to-day and week-to-week experience, and compares it to other programs like Duke, as well as other tiers of college soccer.
As he discusses the recruiting process, Chris also talks about what impresses him in young goalkeepers, why some keepers lose his interest and confidence, and what it takes to excel at the top tier of the college game.
