011: Playing Out of the Back with Chris Barocas
Today’s guest has coached goalkeepers across all age groups and training environments. Chris Barocas began his coaching career at the collegiate level before finding his way to Orlando City and now to the Red Bulls Academy.
In today’s episode, Chris discusses his path to New York. From a standout playing career between the sticks at Averett University, Chris moved to goalkeeper training responsibilities at the club, academy and USL levels for Orlando City before his recent move to the Red Bulls.
Chris talks at length about playing out of the back, why it’s important for the modern goalkeeper, and how he makes it a point of emphasis at every training session. He also discusses the importance of decision-making for young goalkeepers, and differences in development across different age groups.
It’s a dense 30 minutes, and there are over 30 additional minutes in the Outtakes segment, that didn’t fit into the show. I hope you enjoy it!
Special thanks to Chris Barocas for joining me!
