002: The Optimum Training Environment with Karl Spratt
Today’s guest has spent his entire life in goal, playing for the likes of Manchester United’s youth program and now coaching in the elite U.S. Soccer Development Academy. Karl Spratt is the Director of Academy Goalkeeping for the New England Revolution, designing and implementing curriculum for the U13 through U19 age levels.
In today’s episode, Karl discusses his path from player to coach, and from England to New England, including his education in Exercise Science and his coaching experience on both sides of the Atlantic.
Karl describes the traits he looks for in young goalkeepers, as he scouts talent for the Revs Academy, and also addresses the differences between football coaches and football trainers. He also details the ‘optimum training environment’ that he and the other Revolution Academy coaches strive to provide for their players’ daily training needs.
It’s a fairly dense 30 minutes, and there is even some additional content in an Outtakes segment that didn’t fit into the show. I hope you enjoy it!
Special thanks to Karl Spratt for joining me!
