003: The Dreaded ‘D’ Word with Jenny Bindon
Our guest today has literally circled the globe in her career as an international football player, and now as a U.S. soccer coach. Jenny Bindon, best known as the longtime goalkeeper for New Zealand’s international ‘Football Ferns’, is now an assistant coach for the UCLA Bruin women’s soccer program.
In today’s episode, Jenny discusses her early years as a multi-sport collegiate athlete in Illinois, her decade manning New Zealand’s net (including two Olympic games and two World Cups), and her move last year to Southern California.
For aspiring goalkeepers, Jenny talks about distribution – the dreaded ‘D’ word – how important it is in the modern game and a variety of methods for training it. She also addresses the role that other sports, including tennis and basketball, played in helping her to reach her full potential.
It’s a packed 30-minute episode, and there are over 20 minutes of additional discussion in the Outtakes segment below. I hope you enjoy it!
Special thanks to Jenny Bindon for joining me!

Hi
Just discovered this great podcast and I’m working my way through the episodes from the beginning. Really enjoying it and finding it very useful as a GK coach.
The PDF of the transcript for this episode appears to be unavailable, however. I’m getting a File Not Found error.
Regards
Cormac
