053: Concussion Awareness with Briana Scurry
One of the true legends of U.S. Soccer, Briana Scurry has experienced some of the greatest moments of her life on a soccer pitch. Unfortunately, it’s also where she suffered one of the most devastating.
In today’s episode, Briana talks about her epic successes between the posts, defending the U.S. goal for a pair of Olympic gold medals and the 1999 World Cup. She describes her emotions and her approach to the shootout at the end of that World Cup final, as well as her critical save – one of the most famous in U.S. soccer history.
But she also talks at length about the tragic 2010 collision that left her concussed on the field, and suffering debilitating symptoms for years to come. She offers advice for those players eager to avoid concussions, and hope for those who may already be suffering. She is also clear about the very important role that coaches play in the long-term recovery of their players.
Lots of important information on a somber topic, as well as great memories from Briana’s career. There’s even a special Outtakes segment (below) with advice for those keepers getting ready for penalty kicks.
