009: Building Walls with Stan Anderson
Today’s guest has been coaching goalkeepers for over 30 years, and is still going strong. Stan Anderson was an All-American college goalkeeper before embarking on a coaching career that would take him to five colleges across the upper Midwest, a number of clubs, the Chicago Fire Development Academy, and his very own Camp Shutout.
In today’s episode, Stan talks through successful stints with Loyola, UIC and the Wisconsin Badgers, as well as a U18 national championship with the Fire. He also explains the format and the benefits of the annual Camp Shutout programs in Wisconsin and Michigan.
Most of the episode, however, is dedicated to properly building a wall to defend against free kicks. Stan explains the important decisions that a goalkeeper faces, as well as the most efficient process for actually assembling the wall, and the risks you’ll want to avoid. Be sure to download the handy wall-building cheat sheet below for yourself or your keepers.
Special thanks to Stan Anderson for joining me!
