007: Exploring Four National Titles with Oige Kennedy
No matter where he goes, Oige Kennedy seems to produce national titles and All-American goalkeepers. The Stanford Cardinal Assistant Coach has enjoyed two NCAA College Cups in his two seasons in northern California, on the heels of two Division II national championships as the head coach of the Fort Lewis Skyhawks.
Oige talks about his journey to the U.S. and to the pinnacle of college soccer, beginning with his playing career in Ireland, and progressing to his coaching opportunities in Durango, Colorado, and Stanford, California. Along the way, he discusses the three epic penalty shootouts that were necessary to secure Stanford’s last two championships.
Oige places a consistent emphasis on footwork in his goalkeeper training. He talks about that, and also about the important role that mindset plays for goalkeeper development, especially in penalty situations.
Finally, we discuss the modern emphasis on building out of the back with the keeper, and why it might not always be the right answer. I hope you enjoy the show!
Special thanks to Oige Kennedy for joining me!
