089-090: Defending the Cutback Pass with Ollie Richardson
As the Director of Goalkeeping for Phoenix Rising FC Youth and a member of the United Soccer Coaches national goalkeeping staff, Ollie Richardson prepares young goalkeepers for a variety of situations and threats. One challenge that demands considerable attention – and a specific approach – is the highly-dangerous cutback pass.
On this week’s two-part episode, Ollie discusses the cutback in great detail, and even previews a pair of sessions that he’ll deliver at the 2020 United Soccer Coaches national convention.
In Part I, Ollie defines the cutback pass, dividing the threat into three distinct phases – or goals – that need to be defended. He also discusses the critical split-second decision that the goalkeeper needs to make: Cut out the pass or prepare for the imminent shot?
In Part II (below), we move on to specific techniques, tactics and potential problems related to each of the three goals. Ollie also addresses the importance of communication as well as training advice and common pitfalls.
And if you’re in Baltimore for the convention, be sure attend Ollie’s Friday and Saturday sessions for a chance to see all of these concepts on display, both on the field and in the classroom. Lots of great information from an excellent coach. I hope you enjoy it.
Special thanks to OIlie Richardson for joining me!
