086: Veronica Smeltzer of Grindavík
When she made the 2,000-mile journey from Los Angeles to Gaffney, South Carolina, Veronica Smetlzer couldn’t have realized that she was still 3,000 miles away from her first professional goalkeeping opportunity. But after a standout career for the Limestone College Saints, she would find just such an occasion with Ungmennafélag Grindavíkur on the southwest tip of Iceland.
On today’s episode, Veronica discusses a goalkeeping career that is unconventional, to say the least, and may just be getting started.
After a three-year hiatus from goalkeeping and from football, in general, she talks about her transition from field hockey back to the pitch, and back to a level of fitness and sharpness to compete at the collegiate level.
Veronica also discusses her path to Grindavík, Iceland, and her experience in the Icelandic women’s professional game. How was she able to parlay two seasons of Division 2 soccer into a pro contract?
It’s a fun episode, and when you’re finished listening, be sure to read all about her experiences over at Since 71.
