060: David Ousted of the Chicago Fire
David Ousted has experienced a little bit of everything in his goalkeeping journey. After a series of early loans and almost a decade in the Danish Superliga, he left his native Denmark for North America and Major League Soccer. Six years later – and with a number of accolades including an MLS All-Star selection to his name – David is starting a new chapter in his career this season with the Chicago Fire.
In today’s episode, David discusses the many differences between MLS and European soccer, not the least of which is the devastation and euphoria of relegation and promotion. He also talks about developing his game in Denmark, and the highs and lows of those first five seasons in Vancouver.
Along the way, David describes the best methods for transitioning into a new team and the importance of being a vocal presence as the last line of defense. He also explains that there’s no strict handbook for effective goalkeeping, and that keepers need to embrace the psychology of the position.
David admits that he hasn’t always been the most ‘textbook’ goalkeeper, in terms of his technique, but advises young keepers to find the path and the approach that fits their style, even if it’s a bit unorthodox. I hope you enjoy the show!
