055: Tyler Miller of LAFC
As the starting goalkeeper for the Los Angeles Football Club, Tyler Miller and his teammates are currently perched atop the entire Major League Soccer table. And after a recent call-up to Gregg Berhalter’s first U.S. Men’s National Team camp in January, Tyler is finally enjoying the success that many knew was inevitable.
In today’s episode, Tyler talks about his path to MLS and – potentially – the USMNT, beginning with youth soccer in Woodbury, New Jersey. After declining an invitation to the New York Red Bulls academy, he proved that there are plenty of different paths to success in this game.
After competing for his high school team and enjoying a variety of other sports, Tyler chose to continue his development – both on the pitch and in the classroom – for the Northwestern Wildcats. After four standout seasons in Evanston, he tested the European waters before landing in Seattle and eventually at LAFC.
Among other topics, Tyler discusses the importance of playing in the field as well as seeing consistent minutes in goal. He also tackles the importance of mindset for goalkeepers, and a need to recognize those things that you – and can’t – control. And finally, he talks through his performance on a pair of epic shootouts – one each at the college and professional level. I hope you enjoy the show!
Special thanks to Tyler Miller for joining me!

This is a great interview with Tyler Miller. I preach playing other positions in soccer and playing other sports to help develop your goalkeeper skills. I am sharing this with the goalkeepers and parents that attend out training sessions. Even as a Sounder fan, it’s great to hear these stories and happy he has found success in LA and hopefully the USMNT!
