032-033: Goalkeeper Communication with Lisa Cole
With head coaching and goalkeeper-specific experience at the youth, college, professional and international levels, Lisa Cole is one of the most distinguished and respected coaches in the nation. Currently serving as a first-team scout and a Development Academy coach for the Washington Spirit, Lisa brings her expertise to bear on one of the most important subjects in goalkeeping: Communication.
For a special two-part episode, Lisa is tackling one of our most-requested subjects. Goalkeepers are always told to talk, but rarely instructed how or why to do it. We delve into the importance and proper development of goalkeeper communication, and even provide a Goalkeeper Vocabulary Cheat Sheet (below) to get you started.
In Part I of the conversation, Lisa addresses the importance of goalkeeper communication, and how it directly prevents goals being scored. She talks about establishing clear, concise commands that your team can agree on and ways to start building confidence in the voices of young keepers.
In Part II (available below), we dig deeper and address more tactical and technical terminology. Lisa also talks about the importance of purposeful, actionable communication, and avoiding simple chatter.
We cover a lot of ground in the 60 minutes, divided into two episodes. I hope you enjoy it!
Special thanks to Lisa Cole for joining me!
