038: Modern Goalkeeper Coaching with Gary Curneen
Among the most prolific voices in modern coaching and coaching education, Gary Curneen has published six coaching books and almost 100 podcast episodes, all under the Modern Soccer Coach banner. Despite claiming “no interest” in goalkeeping, Gary joins the show to offer fantastic advice for aspiring coaches, and to discuss modern changes in the position.
After a collegiate playing career (as a defensive midfielder), Gary’s coaching journey has taken him from Wingate University to the Chicago Red Stars of the NWSL, by way of Cincinnati and Cal State – Bakersfield.
Gary talks about his coaching path, including important developmental opportunities provided by Gary Hamill at Wingate and José Mourinho (through United Soccer Coaches), and offers some pointed advice for modern coaches – both the field and goalkeeping variety.
Along the way, Gary also addresses the question of how best to incorporate goalkeepers into team training, offers some insight about more realistic – and less homogenized – training sessions, and describes his latest book, Coaching Your 4-3-3.
The episode is a full 30 minutes, and there’s even more in the Outtakes segment below. I hope you enjoy it!

Very interesting and enjoyable interview with Gary Curneen. I really like what he says about being authentic as a coach and about being open to new ideas. There really is more than one right way to play the game.
