023-024: Microcycle Periodization with John Pascarella
Something of a coaching Renaissance Man, John Pascarella has served the soccer community as a head coach, an assistant coach, a goalkeeping coach and a fitness coach, everywhere from the youth game through the professional ranks of MLS. Currently the first-team goalkeeping coach for Minnesota United FC, John brings his expertise in both goalkeeping and exercise physiology to the show.
For a special two-part episode, John is defining and addressing microcycle periodization for the modern goalkeeper. Simply put, in the days leading up to a game, there are activities that a goalkeeper should – and should not – be taking part in. John breaks down the science of aerobic and anaerobic training and recovery, and provides a roadmap for designing effective sessions. And we’re also giving away an autographed copy of John’s fantastic new book, Soccer Goalkeeper Training: The Comprehensive Guide, co-authored with Tony Englund.
In Part I, John defines and demystifies the ten dollar term, “microcycle periodization”. He explains the importance of it, and how to get the most out of your body (as a goalkeeper) or your athlete (as a coach) by planning properly and stressing the right systems on the right days.
In Part II, we dig deeper and move beyond the typical seven-day periodization cycle, for those weeks when you face multiple games. We also discuss age-group and individual athlete differences in periodization.
Along the way, John also discusses his playing career as a pro goalkeeper in Peru and in the early days of MLS. He also talks about his current goalkeepers on Minnesota United, and about the success he enjoyed with both the Maryland Terrapins and Sporting KC.
We cover a lot of ground in the 60 minutes, divided into two episodes, and there’s even more in the Outtakes segment below. I hope you enjoy it!

Another great episode, providing a digestible introduction to periodisation.
Pascarella and Englund’s book is also very good.
