019-020: Learning to Fly with Alex Kuehl
In a famous ice hockey school, in the heart of a hockey state, Alex Kuehl has embraced the sport of soccer and, specifically, the goalkeeping position. Currently the U15 head coach and the head of goalkeeping for the Shattuck-St. Mary’s boys soccer program, Alex has worked with a number of keepers of both national and international repute.
For a special two-part episode, Alex is tackling the topic of diving. It is one of our most-requested subjects, as coaches and keepers strive for safe, effective methods for improving technique, explosiveness and courage.
In Part I, Alex addresses the importance of the Set position, and explains that all diving must be coupled with this firm foundation. He explains proper diving footwork and early diving progressions, building from the ground up. He also outlines some simple drills and signposts for success.
In Part II, we move on to more advanced progressions and ambitious dives, working toward the explosive, acrobatic extension save.
Along the way, Alex also discusses his own development, starting at the youth level, and progressing through ODP to a successful stint at St. Olaf College. He also talks more about the SSM soccer program and recent strong showings in the U.S. Development Academy.
It’s a dense 60 minutes, divided into two episodes, and there’s even more in the Outtakes segment below. I hope you enjoy it!
Special thanks to Alex Kuehl for joining me!
